The gums, ligaments and bone around the teeth are called the periodontium. When the periodontium is not healthy, it can jeopardize the teeth and the rest of the body. Signs of gum disease include gums that are red and bleed very easily, bad breath, loose teeth, splaying of teeth, changes in the bite or position of the teeth, and gums pulling away from the teeth. It is possible to treat periodontal disease by doing deep scaling and root planing with a local anesthetic. If the periodontal disease is too severe, surgery or extractions may be required.
